Should I stop taking supplements for hernia surgery?

In a few weeks, I will undergo a simple inguinal hernia repair and was wondering if I should stop taking any of the following supplements and, if so, how soon prior to the surgery. Any advice? I will also discuss with my physician.

• Coenzyme Q10
• Fish Oil capsules
• Garlic capsules
• Magnesium
• Melatonin
• One-A-Day vitamin/mineral
• Pygeum Africanum extract
• Saw Palmetto
• Stinging Nettle
• Trinovin (red clover extract)
• Vitamin C
• Zyflamend softgels

Well I know the fish oil capsules and One a Day vitamin need to be stopped because they thin the blood. The One a Day has vitamin E in it so that is what thins the blood. I had a hysterectomy and the papers they sent me said all herbal medications should be stopped. Also all aspirins, ibuprofen or any kinds of NSAID's. They also thin the blood and can cause bleeding problems during surgery.

You should get a list from the doctor about it. I've had two surgeries and they gave me a list of all of that ahead of time. I'd stop all of them now. Oh also no alcohol. I'd get my list but it's in the room with my hubby sleeping and I'd have to turn the light on. Just see if you can get the info from your doctor. It might make a difference on the kind of surgery and how extensive it is as to how much bleeding risk there is. So each case may be different depending on your surgery.

i would think the zyflamend and fish oil.  Is the doctor you are talking about also the surgeon?  I would discuss with both.  One might be more aware than the other.    I tried zyflamend and it worked great but within 8 hrs my hiatal hernia flares up!  I can't take nsaids anymore.. i keep trying natural ones.. just in case
